11 years ago, my first EOD Teammate, Aaron Merritt, died at a VA Hospital in Nashville for what was deemed a "lack of communication between doctors and a failure to adhere to basic medical procedures." He died due to negligence. Aaron died only a couple of months after leaving the Army. When his contract was over everyone breathed a sigh of relief; Not because he wasn’t good but because wherever he was combat followed. We were all sure he was going to get killed, so civilian life seemed like a safe choice for him. We were wrong. He was decorated twice for Valor: Once for running through a hellacious firefight to render aid under fire to a wounded Afghan Army Soldier, and again for running through a firefight to resupply mortars and turn the tide of the battle. Aaron was a great human being. He was funny and witty. He has a comeback for everything. He deserved better and his family deserved better. the VA settled with his family for 2.5 million dollars but never admitted guilt in the case. It’s crazy that he’s been gone for over a decade.
