Trauma, C/PTSD, & Gratitude When we've been through trauma or chronic abuse, our brains are often unable to access "gratitude." That's because we're operating in survival mode, or 'hypervigilance.' Trauma sends physiological signals to our nervous systems that says, "Were not safe, high alert, stay guarded." When our brains are receiving these signals - sometimes for weeks, months, years, or even decades, we can't force ourselves into gratitude mode. It's neurologically impossible. We're not ungrateful, but because neurologically, chemically, and biologically our bodies won't allow it. Many institutions, religions, and cultural/ societal norms don't understand this science, so they end up shaming survivors with comments like: "Be happy with what you have," "You should appreciate ____ more," "Be thankful you have (lists stuff)," "You're so ungrateful!" "Why are you so upset with all you have going on?" The truth is; our inability to feel grateful in the moment isn't a moral failing or a lack of character. It's a NORMAL, adaptive response to danger that has been experienced. When our bodies FINALLY get the message that they're safe? Gratitude will naturally, slowly return by itself. It re-emerges once our nervous systems re-calibrate. So when people try to tell us that we should be more grateful or that we have no reason to be upset? Think about limiting their access to us, not out of spite or punishment or whatever, but out of protection. They're speaking from a place of ignorance, not science, and they don't understand what it's like to actually be inside a body that's constantly scanning for danger, so they aren't qualified to judge our healing process.
